짜릿한 사막의 아침부터 화려한 도심의 밤까지!

 

안녕하세요, 이데아입니다. 두바이에서의 셋째 날은 이른 새벽부터 시작됐어요. 무려 아침 6시 30분, 물론, 날은 이미 밝아 있었지만, 이른 시간에 호텔 로비에서 가이드님을 만났답니다. 이렇게 서두른 이유는 단 하나, 바로 '모닝 데저트 사파리' 때문이었죠!

 

해가 뜬 후 시간이 많이 지나면 사막의 모래가 불덩이처럼 뜨거워지기 때문에, 가장 시원한 아침에 사막의 정수를 느끼기 위한 여정이었어요.

아침 일찍부터, 붉은 사막을 가르다!

강력한 4륜 구동차를 타고 도착한 사막은 고요하고 신비로운 붉은빛으로 가득했어요. 이곳에서 우리는 시간 가는 줄 모르고 사막과 하나가 되었답니다. 경사진 모래 언덕을 보드 하나에 의지해 미끄러져 내려오는 '샌드보딩'은 생각보다 훨씬 짜릿했어요! 넘어지고 뒹굴어도 푹신한 모래 덕에 웃음이 끊이질 않았죠.

아무리 현지 음식이 맛있어도, 한국인은 역시 뜨끈한 국물과 밥이 그리워지나 봐요. 저희는 다시 Careem을 타고 한식당 '소반(Soban)'으로 향했습니다. 그곳에서 주문한 메뉴는 바로 차돌 김치찌개와 낙지 돌솥밥! 얼큰한 김치찌개 국물 한 숟갈에 "바로 이 맛이야!"라는 말이 절로 나왔어요. 역시 한식이 최고라는 진리를 다시 한번 깨닫는 순간이었죠.

이데아의 결론: 두바이의 두 얼굴을 만나다

호텔로 돌아와 제 반쪽과 함께 어제처럼 '잭콕' 한 잔을 기울이며 하루를 마무리했어요.

셋째 날은 그야말로 두바이의 두 얼굴을 모두 경험한 날이었어요. 태초의 자연을 닮은 붉은 사막의 아침과 최첨단 기술로 지어진 화려한 도시의 밤. 이 극명한 대비가 바로 두바이의 진짜 매력이 아닐까요?

From the thrilling desert morning to the glamorous city night!

Our third day in Dubai began at the break of dawn—6:30 in the morning, to be exact.
Of course, the sun was already up by then, but we met our guide early in the hotel lobby for one reason only: the Morning Desert Safari.

 

You see, once the sun climbs higher, the desert sand turns scorching hot like burning coals.
So this early journey was planned to experience the true essence of the desert while it was still pleasantly cool.

Before the Sun, We Conquered the Red Desert!

Arriving in a powerful 4x4 vehicle, the desert was filled with a serene and mysterious red glow. Here, we became one with the desert, losing all track of time. 'Sandboarding', sliding down a sloped sand dune on a single board, was much more thrilling than I expected! We couldn't stop laughing even when we fell and tumbled, thanks to the soft sand.

Next up was the highlight of the desert, the jeep safari. Every time we raced over the breathtaking sand dunes, the ladies in our group screamed with delight, making the atmosphere even more exciting. On one side, a camel riding experience was in full swing, but my other half and I, not being fond of the unique smell, decided to be content with watching from a distance.

Conquering The Dubai Mall: A Time for Food and Shopping

After the thrilling desert tour, we returned to the hotel and finally had some free time. We took a sweet break after a shower to escape the hot sun, and then set out to explore another heart of Dubai, 'The Dubai Mall'. Our transportation was the local taxi app, 'Careem'. With the hotel shuttle and Careem, we could go anywhere!

We visited 'Al Hallab' at The Dubai Mall, a restaurant highly recommended by a friend who had worked in Dubai for a long time. In this place with a strong local vibe, we ordered Hummus Avocado, a Mixed Grill of Meat, and freshly baked Naan. The combination of the smooth hummus and the juicy grilled meat was absolutely fantastic! Oh, and a tip here! The saying that water is more expensive than gasoline in Dubai turned out to be true. The price of a bottle of water at the restaurant was jaw-dropping.

After a satisfying meal, we roamed around The Dubai Mall and admired the magnificent view of the Burj Khalifa from the outside. (Actually, I have a fear of heights, so high places are a... pass for me!) Taking a moment to enjoy tea at a café was enough to cool down from the desert heat.

Actually, we didn’t plan to go up the Burj Khalifa, but we were determined to see the Dubai Fountain Show.
However, to our disappointment, the fountain was closed due to renovation work… 😢
With a heavy heart, we had to give up on it.

Koreans Run on Rice Power! Dinner is Korean Food

No matter how delicious the local food is, it seems Koreans always long for a hot soup and rice. We once again took a Careem to a Korean restaurant called 'Soban'. The dishes we ordered there were Chadol Kimchi Jjigae (Beef Briskot Kimchi Stew) and Nakji Dolsotbap (Spicy Octopus in a Hot Stone Pot). One spoonful of the spicy kimchi stew broth made me exclaim, "This is the taste!" It was a moment to realize the truth that Korean food is the best.

Idea's Conclusion: Meeting the Two Faces of Dubai

Returning to the hotel, I ended the day with my other half, sipping a glass of 'Jack and Coke' just like the day before. The third day was truly a day of experiencing both faces of Dubai. The morning in the red desert, resembling primordial nature, and the night in the glamorous city built with cutting-edge technology. Isn't this stark contrast the real charm of Dubai?

And for those traveling to Dubai in May, a crucial piece of advice! Outdoor activities are really tough while the sun is out. It's essential to plan all itineraries around indoor locations and use shuttles or taxis for transportation!

A1: The Morning Safari, which we experienced, focuses on thrilling activities like dune bashing and sandboarding in the early morning. It's recommended if you are short on time or love activities! On the other hand, the Evening Safari focuses more on cultural experiences and romance, including watching the desert sunset, a BBQ dinner at the camp, and a belly dance performance. If you want to experience the fantasy of the Arabian Nights, the Evening Safari would be better!

 

Q2: There are so many restaurants in The Dubai Mall. Any tips for finding a good one?
A2: That's right, it's huge! Getting a recommendation from a local acquaintance is the best, as we did. But if that's difficult, checking Google Maps ratings is a basic step. Alternatively, look for restaurants in the 'Souk Al Bahar' area, which is connected to the mall and offers views of the Dubai Fountain. You're likely to find a decent restaurant with a great view there. 'Al Hallab', where we went, is also a great choice!

 

Q3: Is the taxi app 'Careem' difficult to use? Any precautions?
A3: It's almost identical to using Uber, so it's not difficult. It's convenient to have it auto-pay if you register your credit card in advance. However, at malls or the airport, you must go to a designated 'Pick-up Point' to get your car, so follow the app's guidance carefully. It's always safe to get into the habit of checking the car's license plate and the driver's face against the app screen before you get in!
