On our fourth day in Dubai, it was a morning where the sadness of the trip's end and the excitement to make the most of the last day intersected. After a solid hotel breakfast, we headed to 'The Dubai Mall' once again using the hotel shuttle, all for some final shopping!

The Dubai Mall, revisited, was as jaw-droppingly glamorous and huge as ever. But what caught my eye that day wasn't the fancy products. It was the sight of local people spending their leisure time in the mall's cafes and restaurants. The scene of people in traditional Middle Eastern attire gathering in small groups and chatting was truly impressive. Strangely, the area we were in had very few tourists and was mostly filled with Dubai citizens, which made it feel special, as if we were peeking into their daily lives.

Of course, this process wasn't always smooth. During the 2009 global financial crisis, they shocked the world by declaring a 'moratorium', signaling a near-national bankruptcy situation. However, they overcame that crisis to be reborn as the hub of finance, tourism, and real estate that it is today. The glamorous Dubai Mall we saw and the citizens enjoying their leisure while preserving tradition are the very results of this intense history and coexistence.

A Bumpy Lunch, and a Sweet Shopping Time

After looking around for a while, we got hungry. We had heard that a steakhouse in The Dubai Mall had a 'happy hour' and went to find it, but what a surprise! We received the shocking news that the happy hour had been discontinued just the week before. Leaving our disappointment behind, we decided to opt for a familiar and reliable taste and called a Careem. Our destination? The Korean restaurant from yesterday, 'Soban'!

After filling our stomachs with hearty Korean food, we returned to The Dubai Mall and began our gift shopping in earnest. The time spent picking out presents while thinking of family and friends is always joyful. After enjoying our shopping spree, we returned to the hotel by Careem, our hands full of shopping bags.

The Last Supper at 'Banc', A Friend from a Brother Country

We decided to have our last dinner in Dubai at the hotel's restaurant, 'Banc'. We wanted to wrap up our trip in a place with a nice atmosphere. Shortly after ordering our food, the restaurant manager approached us and asked where we were from. When I replied, "We're from Korea," a bright smile spread across his face.

"I am from Türkiye! Nice to meet you, my brothers!" he said, welcoming us warmly as he spoke of the 'brother country' that helped South Korea during the Korean War. It was a heart-touching moment of unexpected hospitality and historical connection in a foreign land. Along with the delicious food, the human warmth made our last night in Dubai even more special.

Returning to our hotel room, we spent our last night in Dubai sipping a 'Jack and Coke' with my other half, like a familiar ritual. The glamorous shopping and delicious food were great, but what ultimately completed the day was the warm smile of the Turkish manager we met at the restaurant. It made me realize once again that travel is, in the end, about the meeting of people.

And one last important tip! Alcohol sales are restricted in Dubai, and it's very expensive to buy at restaurants. If you want to enjoy a light drink in the evening like we did, I strongly recommend buying your alcohol in advance at a duty-free shop!
